  | One more question - caused by a symptom. If I have have three ide
  | drives wired up, drive and CD on first IDE connector, a second master
  | drive on the second ide connector, the system does not see any of the
  | drives - disconnecting the second hard drive, on second ide conn,
  | I get the first two back.

Sorry, no idea, like Simon, I have 4 IDE devices on my PC164 - I have wd0
and wd1 on the primary interface, and cd0 and cd1 on the secondary (I don't
need IDE cd drives to boot from, I also have scsi cd ... one bootable cd
drive is plenty). But I do need (well, want...) to be able to boot from
both wd drives.

But this sounds similar to a PC problem I have had, where a CD added to an
IDE cable (properly jumpered as slave, etc) simply wouldn't appear at all.
Stick it on the secondary interface, and everything was fine.

Either there's some truly odd condition in the ide code that is making
some stuff fail, or the hardware is truly flaky stuff - and I think I'd
tend to suspect the latter ... I had no wintrash to test whether it saw
both the drive and CD when they were on the same cable, so no help there.
