i think i got lazy and just pulled sound support completely out.  it wasn't
getting probed by the GENERIC kernel, and not being overy familiar with the
alpha hardware i didn't know what was needed to make sound work on that box.

i'll stop being lazy and research it.  i'll build you a new kernel tonight.
(you want a benchmark linc? that thing builds a kernel like a bat out of hell)
