I don't think so - the program is niced 20 from the start, and the
slowdown effect only starts after several days. And, I could have
mentioned this before, the cpu usage remains the same (nearly 100%),
even when slowed down.

I suppose some other cpu-hog should be tried before we conclude it is a
system problem. It might be an application problem somehow... Is it easy
to get "performance" numbers out of, say, Seti@Home clients?
