ok, /usr/is hosed to the point of no return.  so i can work from single user
mode if that'll help anyone, otherwise i need to rebuild the box.  i think
i'm gonna go get a different HDD.  maybe i'll snag the RZ28 out of my /700
since it doesn't have an OS on it yet.

i'd like to figure out what happened though if i could.
