Hate to be different from everyone else, but this works for me:

mysql> select NOW();
+---------------------+
| NOW()               |
+---------------------+
| 2000-10-06 21:58:02 |
+---------------------+
1 row in set (0.00 sec)

mysql> status
--------------
mysql  Ver 9.38 Distrib 3.22.32, for -netbsd (alpha)

...
mysql> quit
