Yes...so?  If the filesystem is supposed to take up the whole disk, I
can't see what's wrong with that.

Not in my experience.  Several of "my" machines have filesystems on c
partitions; one of them is even an alpha (though it's wd0c rather than
sd0c that has the c-partition filesystem on that machine).

There's also no particular reason to make it the d partition if you do
want to put it on some other partition.
