just for the sake of clarity, i'm going to display my ignorance here.. to
me, 'serial console' means a dumb terminal, like the old ADM-3a. the
kind of thing where you plug into the serial console with a hand-made null
modem cable, and pray that the keyboard still works. if i'm off base
here, please let me know.

that's not what i'm using. i have a standard VGA monitor plugged into
the built-in video port on the back of the machine. keyboard and mouse
are each plugged into their separate ports on the back of the machine, but
the two 9-pin connectors i associate with serial i/o are empty.

from what i've seen looking around in the machine, video support is built
right into the motherboard. there is no separate PCI card for video
installed at this time.

i did try using such a card earlier, and it didn't make any
difference. i still got the same error, even though the monitor was
plugged into the card.

just for the sake of it, i've reinstalled the PCI video card, and plugged
the monior back into that. >>>show config yeilds the same information as
before, with the additional of the line:

     Bus 00 Slot 13: Vendor: 5333 Device: 8a01

and, interestingly enough, >>>show devs fails to return anything at
all.. all i get is another >>> prompt.
