Does anyone know if it is possible to drive the serial port of the
DEC3000/300 at a speed greater than 9600? I just got a US Robotics
Sportster 33.6 Faxmodem to upgrade the old, unreliable 9600 NoName
external I'd been borrowing up to now. Disappointingly, however, I seem
to be getting about the same speed as before, making me suspicious that
my DEC3000/300 is still driving the serial port at 9600. (The modem is
plugged into the serial port used by the serial console; I switch cables
after booting, and the console is set to "off" in /etc/ttys.)

I have the speed set to 57600 in my /etc/ppp/options file, but ping
times indicate roughly the same throughput as the previous modem (driven
off my DECstation 3100 running NetBSD/pmax 1.4.1-release, whose serial
port can't manage more than 9600).

Any tips on driving the modem faster? I am running NetBSD/alpha 1.4V
(from a recently-SUPped -current).

Help and/or hints/tips gratefully appreciated.

Cheers,

Paul.
