Milo (lilo) is the cockroach of booting systems.   Almost nothing will
kill it.   Most effective is probably to completely step all over the
first part of the drive (write anything there, whatever it is won't matter
but it needs to be bigger than just a few blocks).   That completely
destroys its habitat, and seems to at least get rid of all the symptoms.
Just be careful to keep everything clean, and never let it in again.
