It's entirely possible that the VM system was partially responsible for
the difference.

The 1.4 and post-1.4 VM on the alpha is greatly improved.

If you want to send me a binary, I could certainly run it on both a
333MHz AlphaStation 600 and a 500MHz AlphaStation 500, both running
NetBSD-current, and report my findings.
