Nope, "show console" definitely shows "serial". However, when I typed "init"
the board just hung, or at least, it stopped printing out any more output. I
just did a power-cycle after that, and now I'm in the current state.

Have you tried "set console serial" then "init" at the SRM prompt? I'd
guess that "show console" will say that your console is set to
"graphics".
