Assuming I'm reading the man page right, the answer is no.  I tried
"echo A > /dev/speaker", and it took about a second to do nothing.
Note, this is on a Multia, and I've tried it with speakers plugged
into both the headphone and the sound-out ports.  (Does the Multia
even have a built-in speaker?  I took mine apart, but I couldn't find
a speaker inside it.)
