Also worth noting: at the time, gcc didn't support the necessary bits
to do rounding and trapping modes right on the alpha.  (i.e. it wasn't
capable of generating code which software completion handlers could
sanely operate on.)  I wasn't going to go there, since, as noted, i am
_not_ the man when it comes to FP.

However, that's since been addressed.
