I did see that go by on the egcs list this morning, and I put it in my
`pending' file. (But don't let me stop anyone else from working on it. :-)

The alphas do have a boatload of low-level performance monitoring HW ..
if that package can make good use of the HW there may be some substantial
value in it. Modern processors are highly dependent on cache performance
.. a single miss out to DRAM can easily blow several hundred (!) instruction
dispatch opportunities.
