Actually, if I recall correctly, it wasn't as much Digital
UNIX-centric as it was expectant that the system would provide
"normal-looking" ELF headers.  NetBSD doesn't provide normal-looking
ELF headers, and so it loses.

In any case, the right thing to do is probably copy the relevant bits
out of the GNU emacs source, like I said.  8-)
