I finally got my problems solved. It turned out that a combination
of having a manual which was entirely wrong on the pins and having
`standard PC' connectors here that are different from what DEC
perceives to be `standard PC' connectors combined to make my life
a misery for a little while. Thanks to everyone who helped out.
