G'day,

my attempt to compile the complete source tree on my alpha AXPpci system
failed after it tried to compile shared libraries.

I have added

NOPIC=
TOOLCHAIN=
MACHINE_ARCH="alpha"

this seem to have made the system happy. Is this the correct way? I've got
caught half way thru the compile and don't want to make things worse as is

I am using the sources from 15. Feb 97 and want to compile new binaries for
the alpha and i386 boxes...
