I'd just like to confirm that compiling a kernel without the pcivga
device works properly for a serial boot; the system detects the
tga correctly.

I'd also like to note that, if anyone else out there is trying to
do this, you have to manually add a file called `pcivga.h' containing
`#define NPCIVGA 0' to your compile directory after the configure,
otherwise your kernel won't compile.

I'm poking about a bit to see if I can find out what causes this
false detection.
