Well, I can't answer for all situations but in my case (mostly DragonFly
user), it's a tremendous progress.
OpenOffice never ran natively on DragonFly, only the linux binary
package was (sort-of) usable.
OpenOffice was dying from bureaucracy and NIH syndrome. LibreOffice
started from the same codebase but, contrary to the former project,
started to clean up the accumulated mess ("technical debt").
The project is very open and encourages developers from all horizons to
participate.
Thomas Klausner managed to push most misc/openoffice* pkgsrc patches in
LibreOffice, in the few weeks following the official announcement of the
new project.
Tons of bugs have been fixed since September 2010, some of them 20+
years old. I personally removed many instances of broken code and fixed
various portability issues.
So yes, I believe LibreOffice is stable enough to be used instead of
OpenOffice where it is possible.
