Well, the first question to answer is, if the package binaries 
actually run on amd64. When I tried this summer, simple linux32 cli 
stuff worked, but Matlab (which is the one tool that is interesting 
for me there) did not. As a result, there is no amd64 installation 
around here that I could test on.

Once the package binaries are confirmed working, you should be able 
to build i386 linux32 binaries with them, yes.
