Assuming you left it in the foreground...did it drop back to a prompt, or just 
hang?  Did the screen go black like something was going to happen but didn't?  
Was there an error message?  Does the same thing happen if you try M1 or M2?

After I export the var and fire off the command, there is less than a second 
before I get the splash screen and intro music.

About 3/4 of the way down the page.  Because of the history of A1's 
development, some map files are in the classic Mac (think OS 9) format, some 
are in the early SDL version format (which was for platforms other than the old 
Macs), and now there is the new-and-improved Unimap format that should work for 
all A1 builds regardless of platform.  It's possible to have incompatibilities 
between the engine and the data files, but using Unimaps should eliminate that.
