This is my understanding as well. As far as I can tell, offlineimap is just in
maintenance mode while offlineimap3 is still under active development.
Offlineimap3 seems to be a fork with different maintainers but still under the
same GitHub org.

I agree, this does seem strange. If we do decide to keep offlineimap around
we'll have to note that it conflicts with offlineimap3.

I can't imagine there's any reason to continue using offlineimap, and if someone
still needed it, it's trivial to install with just the following command (in a
Python 2 environment):

    pip install git+https://github.com/OfflineIMAP/offlineimap

In other words, I vote for replacing offlineimap with offlineimap3.
