Do you have a mk.conf override at all?
 
I'm away for Christmas visits at the moment so don't have access to my 
usual rig, but am pretty sure the WRKOBJDIR example was working as 
expected when I left.  pkgsrc is deliberately mounted read-only by 
default.

Please feel free to open a GitHub issue for this (or anything else!) and 
we can try and diagnose there.
