This was caused by a dying disk that I had replaced the other day that
(unnoticed) had grown bad bits a bit earlier than I assumed.

In the end x11-links did not work as expected and things did go wrong.

After reinstalling base sets with known good ones and rebuilding x11-links
everything started to work again.
