This is very wrong, and will mean for example that R packages will neverbe built with MAKE_JOBS, as well as potentially causing problems similarto the one you are experiencing.

Is there a specific limitation in R that means it can't build in thebuild phase like everything else, or is this just an oversight in thedesign of Makefile.extension?
