Well I have to apologise for repeating this.  I normally read all the messages on this list, but I must've had a bad week because I have that thrad, all unread, in my inbox.  But thank you for pointing me to it.

For the record, 
EXTRACT_OPTS_TAR+=--no-xattrs
is the (temporary) solution to this problem.
