I don't disagree with that. Having 8.x users be in a situation where 
they update pkgin and then can't update binary packages over https isn't 
a good situation. As someone that builds their own binary packages 
(including pkgin) I notice I've added:

USE_BUILTIN.openssl=no

to my mk.conf for by 8.x builds which I think forces libarchive to also 
use pkgsrc openssl avoiding the mixed libcrypto issue you saw. Seems to 
me that needs to be the default for the bulk builds on 8.0 only.
