mutt gmail smtp requires cyrus-sasl plain?

Use of gmail smtp with mutt used to work long back for me. For a while it
hasn't been working. I get the "No authenticators available" error.

Some search shows it requires cyrus-sasl with plain text auth, which is
disabled in security/cyrus-sasl in pkgsrc Makefile.common without any
option.

Is there any other way to get mutt work with gmail smtp?
