I hadn't paid attention to Xorg.0.log, but sure enough:

[ 72.063] (II) intel(0): [DRI2] DRI driver: i965
[ 72.063] (II) intel(0): [DRI2] VDPAU driver: i965

which would make it appear that such a library would be provided as part
of the driver/dri/drm support for the various graphics devices and the
"libvdpau" package is just a front end for it.

The only files with names containing "vdpau" in "xsrc" are part of the
in-tree MesaLib.
