Octave GUI issues

Anyone successfully running the octave GUI on CentOS?

octave --no-gui works fine for me, but if I try to run with the GUI, it 
just hangs:

Linux centosdev.ceas  bacon ~ 63: (pkgsrc): octave
xkbcommon: ERROR: failed to add default include path 
/sharedapps/pkg-2017Q2/share/X11/xkb

From here it does not respond to Ctrl+C and I have to kill it from 
another shell.
