devel/bmake + devel/mk-configure

I am having a problem compiling devel/mk-configure on Darwin.  The configure script uses ${MAKE_VERSION} as an argument to test(1), but on Darwin this is defined but empty.  Consequently, the test(1) command is ill-formed and fails.  I have a simple patch to address this symptom, but would prefer something better as it is not really addressing the problem.

The fundamental problem seems to be that devel/bmake does not define MAKE_VERSION correctly, i.e., it is empty.  Apparently, this might be fixed at some point more recently than the bmake in pkgsrc, which is version 20150505.  Is there a reason not to update devel/bmake to a more recent version?  If so, does anyone have bandwidth for that? I am uncertain what would be required.
