distfile mirror site preferences and how to influence them?

There is a group of systems I keep updated that seem to insist on fetching
package distfiles predominantly from European mirror sites. Since that
means transatlantic (or longer) communication (systems are in Texas,
USA), the speeds are usually throttled to no more than dialup (5KB/s,
sometimes less). This makes updating packages like Firefox and LibreOffice
take 12 hours, sometimes a few days to fetch their distfiles.

I see "MASTER_SORT" and "MASTER_SORT_REGEX" as the only tools to influence
fetch locations. "MASTER_SORT" being inclusive rather than exclusive
would make it tedious to use. I can probably make "MASTER_SORT_REGEX"
say "not these patterns."

Any other suggestions?

Thanks.
