An addition to the test with curses:  For me printw does only convert multibyte to wide char when compiled with ASAN.  (Comment before -fsanitize=address need to be removed).

The output is

correctly "äöüß" with ASAN

and wrong "Ã¤Ã¶Ã¼Ã" without ASAN.

This has nothing to do with ncurses of course, I just wanted to give more information to the previous mail.
