I'm not sure why you think so.

The hardware just can not do atomic 64bit ops (that is why we do not
define __HAVE_ATOMIC64_OPS for userland on i386). All our userland
deals fine with that.

As others have noted, there is no realistic chance of Firefox running on
pre-pentium (or actually early pentium I) systems anyway, so it would be
fine to tune the pkg for 686 or newer IMHO.
