pkg_chk -q -u ... Unable to read PKGCHK_CONF

Hi,
I'm trying to determine what in my pkgsrc tree is out of date so am trying:
   pkg_chk -q -u
it eventually dies with:
   ** Unable to read PKGCHK_CONF
'/usr/src/pkgsrc/2014Q4/pkgchk_update-XXXXXX.conf'

Is this the right command?  Or is there something better?

PS: yes touching the file gets past it
