libtool creating bad -Wl,\n

I'm trying to create a new package (membase) and running into an issue
where one of the generated libtool scripts is getting a bad value for
wl="-Wl,
"

note the newline.

if I run configure manually I do not get this issue.

lt_prog_compiler_wl is wrong but it's set so many times in aclocal.m4
and configure that it's tough to track down.

Any hints?
