It seems a bit odd that libflashplayer.so does not have execute
permissions; I'd try chmodding it 555 and see if that changes anything.

after chmod, nothing has changed.

There is another problem, this time with Google Maps. I think it's always the problem with Flash.  Firefox crashes.

The next best guess, as others have suggested, is that some other
process has the audio device open.  What does "ps -ax" say immediately
after you fail to hear sound from your flash video?
