Odd firefox behaviour

With the firefox-3.5.5 package (on NetBSD5.0_STABLE/i386) I'm seeing the
following.

If you run it via /usr/pkg/bin/firefox everything seems to work fine but if
you run /usr/pkg/lib/firefox/firefox basic things work but if you try to
access an https page you get

"Problem loading page"

Firefox doesn't know how to communicate with the server.
* Check to make sure your system has the Personal Security Manager
installed.

You may wonder why you would run /usr/pkg/lib/firefox/firefox but if that
value is not stored in GConf firefox pops up the "Firefox is not the
default browser" dialog box and if you click "yes" to making it the default
then that is the path that gets written to GConf.
So you get the situation that if you run firefox directly everything works
but if something like thunderbird fires it up https fails.

Any ideas how to fix?

cheers
mark
