A few days ago I rebuilt perl5.10nb6 on an almost current i386 system
without problems:
[loan8] /var/db/pkg # perl -v
This is perl, v5.10.0 built for i386-netbsd-thread-multi
Copyright 1987-2007, Larry Wall
...
[loan8] /var/db/pkg # uname -a
NetBSD loan8 5.99.16 NetBSD 5.99.16 (GENERIC) #0: Sat Sep 5 00:17:14 UTC 2009 6

(well, some package requested it, replaced it over 5.8, then had to
rebuild all the installed 5.8 modules as well, but I don't think this
is relevant).
