So can you try to find out how the newline gets into
the string? Afaict this is done by "configure". There
is some sed magic involved, perhaps this is where it
breaks.

If USE_LIBTOOL is defined, occurences of "libtool" are
replaced by a small wrapper which calls the pkgsrc version.
