I used to run a mixed stable/testing Debian with not a lot of trouble, 
have you tried that route? You might also check out Martin Krafft's very 
good _The Debian System_ for hints about how to configure the dpkg/apt 
system to get a particular version of a software package. I don't recall 
the details of how to do it but it might be less labor-intensive.
