running Linux binaries on amd64?

What is the status of being able to run 32-bit Linux binaries on
amd64?  Neither openoffice2-bin nor acroread7 are working for me.  I'm
using a near-GENERIC kernel.  (If they shouldn't work, I'd expect the
Makefile to catch it and refused to install them.)
