I was able to make the test succeed by patching the configure script to
include -lpthread in the LIBS statement, i.e.,
The line
LIBS="-lxine $LIBS"
was changed to
LIBS="-lxine -lpthread $LIBS"
(Adding a -pthread option to gcc works too.)
After rebuilding kdemultimedia artsd again works.
