Does it make sense to make it which frontend to build configurable

For me, it would be useful. Though Pidgin and Finch can be considered
separate.

I have looked a FreeBSD ports and they have libpurple, fitch and pidgin packages, because other IM can use libpurple to connect and communicate
over IM networks.

   Yeah, after thinking about it, I realized that:

   1) It really should be split up into three separate packages.

   2) I have no idea how to do that. :-)

I think that this is way to go
cp -R chat/pidgin chat/fitch
add fitch flag to Makefile and try to build change PLIST, change DESCR.

AFAIK pidgin has configure flag to build only libpurple so add also libpurple
package with process mentioned above.

Is anyone else working on this, or should I continue trying to figure
pkgsrc out?

Best option for you and pkgsrc is that you will do it ;D.
