I just tried this on Debian 3.1 i686 (privileged pkgsrc installation) and
could not reproduce it.
What does "bmake show-var VARNAME=X11_TYPE" say?

If libX11.so cannot be found in work/.buildlink/lib/ there may be
something wrong with your package x11-links or xorg-libs, depending on
your X11_TYPE.
