I found what I was missing... pkgtools/pkg_alternatives.
There seem to be a generic usage pattern (at least for me) here: when I
bump into an error while fiddling with packages, that comes from the
tools and not from the code itself, there often is a package under
pkgtools that can solve my problem but which I am not aware of ;-)
