I didn't notice the inclusion of www/firefox's makefile which has the
GCC_REQD=3.4. Sorry for the wasted space on the mailing list.

If this is not my problem, then does anyone have an idea why it
complains about needing -fPIC when it seems to already be specified?

Is it missing in one of the actual, i.e. in the source tarball,
makefiles perhaps?  From observing the compilation, it seems to be
specified throughout.
