"pkgsrc" uses the GCC coming with Mac OS X. Mac OS X has a command
called "gcc_select" which allows you to define the default compiler.
BTW: which version of GCC is actually installed on your system?
The initial version 4.0 shipped with Mac OS X Tiger had
a lot of problems. GCC 4.0.1 is part of Xcode tools 2.3
and 2.4 which can be downloaded on the Apple website.
Kind regards
