kismet not building/installing

When I build net/kismet, it compiles things, then says

        => Unwrapping files-to-be-installed.
        make: Unknown modifier '/'

If I do a 'make install', it says

=> Running PRE-INSTALL script actions

The following users need to be created for kismet-2006.04.01:

        dummy: , /nonexistent, /sbin/nologin
        shift: , /nonexistent, /sbin/nologin

*** Error code 1

I have no idea where 'dummy' and 'shift' come from...
