As for me I don't know anything about it ... but :)

Maybe you could use the Helix Player on NetBSD instead. It is open source 
and makes more sense for someone to work on it.

I don't know if it works on NetBSD (yet) but I can probably help with 
packaging.

It seems like I met someone from Helix (here in my vicinity) that said 
they'd be interested in porting it to NetBSD.
